This was written about 14 months after I began the 'car reflector' works. I wrote a few short pieces about my work over that period, but this was the one that probably defined what I was about the best. It was either written for a show at CWW or one that they were curating. |

My work has, for a long period, dealt with my fascination with the Urban environment. This has been influenced by my roots in South London, together with the potent imagery of Rock Artists on either side of the Atlantic such as The Clash and Springsteen. This latest body of work uses the solids and voids created by tunnels, buildings and streets, and as seen from an overhead view, similar to how we view a particular place via a map. A map is such a wonderfully abstract informant, merely a collection of lines and marks, but something that can help form our perception of a place, and it's inhabitants. Some of my work uses maps, that draw reference to my own personal history, but these can also be taken into a wider context. The tail lights and indicators of the motor vehicle weave in and out of these streets like it's outer clothing (Particularly in America) and in the black hole of the night they create the transient symbol that links neighbourhood to neighbourhood, and the social diversity within them. |
